Sam Mendes has revealed that Daniel Craig would not have been his first choice to play James Bond.
Mendes reunites with Craig for Skyfall, the pair worked together on The Road To Perdition, which is Craig's third outing as 007.
And Mendes admits that he did have reservations when Craig was announced as the actor to take over from Pearce Brosnan - but he loved his performance in Casino Royale.
Speaking to Total Film the director said: "I was one of the people who said I didn't think he was the right casting.
"At the time I was asked in an interview and I said I'm not sure, I would have advised him not to do it. I was completely wrong.
"I bumped into him after Casino Royale and I was so excited [to see him as Bond]. To watch him go through that intense pressure of being cast as Bond with flying colours... it was great to see him come through that and prove the doubters wrong."
Filming is currently underway on Skyfall, which also stars Judi Dench, Ralph Fiennes and Javier Bardem
Skyfall is released 26th October.
