Russell Crowe says Tom Hooper wanted the singing in Les Miserables to be 'raw and real'.
The Oscar winning actor takes on the role of Javert in the musical but has come under fire from singer Adam Lambert.
The singer criticised the decision to cast big named stars over great singers and believed that the vocals should have been recorded in a studio rather than live on set.
Crowe took to Twitter to say that he didn't disagree with Lambert but Hooper wanted certain things from the vocal performance.
Crowe tweeted: "I don't disagree with Adam.
"Sure it could have been sweetened, [director] Tom Hooper wanted it raw and real, that's how it is."
Crowe is part of an all star cast that includes Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried.
Les Miserables is released 11th January.
