Russell Brand drew on his own drink and drug past for his new character in Get Him To The Greek.
The comedian turned actor teams up with Jonah Hill for the new comedy in which he plays rocker Aldous Snow.
The movie follows a record company intern (Hill) who is hired to accompany out-of-control British rock star Aldous Snow (Brand) to a concert at L.A.'s Greek Theatre.
The actor believes that the script was written with his own drug past in mind and doesn't mind returning to that period in his life.
Speaking to Comingsoon.net the actor said: "It's really good because it's more fun to play him on drugs because now it enables me to relive the better aspects of my own drunken hell without some of the terrible consequences.
"I think it was written with my personal problems in mind so yes, I was able to bring a lot of that to the script.
"I went through all of those years with a crack and heroine addiction I might as well get some money out of it. It cost enough. It was expensive. You get beaten up and go to crack houses. There's a down beat in a crack house."
'Get Him to the Greek' is a follow up to 2008's 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall', and features a number of cameos from stars including Russell's girlfriend Katy Perry, pop star Pink and music mogul P. Diddy.
Get him to the Greek is Brand's first acting role since Forgetting Sarah Marshall back in 2008, but he does have a string of roles in the pipeline.
He is all set to play Trinculo in The Tempest, alongside Helen Mirren, before lending his voice to the character of Dr Nefario in Despicable Me.
