Russell Brand has revealed that he would sniff alcohol before filming a scene for his new movie Arthur.

The funnyman takes on the title role in the movie - who is a drunken playboy - and a whiff of alcohol would trigger 'giddy' and 'wild memories' for Brand.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight the actor said: "What I used to do - with great caution - is I'd carry a bottle of rum or whiskey or tequila around and before each take I'd take a big nose full of that stuff and it would evoke much more the giddy, wild memories of when I was a boozer.

The actor went on to say that it was something that caught on with the rest of the cast.

"Jennifer Garner was smelling booze before things. Helen Mirren smelling booze before things.

"It was like New Jack City. It was an epidemic of booze smelling."

Arthur sees brand reunite with Helen Mirren, after working together on The Tempest, in what has already been a busy movie year for the comedian.

Brand is back on the big screen this week, or his voice it at least, as he voices the character of E.B. in Hop.

Arthur is released 22nd April.
