Rupert Sanders revealed that he went back to the original Snow White story when he working on Snow White and the Huntsman.
The director admits that he wanted to keep some traditional elements of the story in place before 'turning it on its head' to create something new.
Sanders is back in the director's chair this week for a re-telling of the Snow White tale with Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron all on the cast list.
Speaking at the UK press conference of the movie Sanders said: "I think I went back to the original story because that story is so rich and so relevant and has survived so long.
"There are so many great images, ideas and themes in there that an audience know what they expect to see, there are certain iconic things they are going to see, but it was about turning it on its head and creating something very epic and modern.
"Then it was about bringing this cast together to give very strong, dynamic, frightening and grounded performances."
Snow White and the Huntsman marks the directorial debut for Sanders with Evan Daugherty, John Lee Hancock and Hossein Amini penning the script.
Snow White and the Huntsman is released 30th May
