Robert Redford

Robert Redford

I say, 'Hey, I'd like to be (in that movie),' and they say, 'Would you? You're kidding.'

Robert Redford is keen to let Hollywood producers know he's still an actor for hire, because he fears many casting chiefs think he's retired.

The movie great admits he's often perplexed when he approaches studios about roles he'd like to play - and executives are shocked he's still interested in being in front of camera.

Redford, who has become a leading environmentalist, businessman and revered film director, tells ABC News, "I say, 'Hey, I'd like to be (in that movie),' and they say, 'Would you? You're kidding.'

"Something is happening over the years that makes a lot of people think that I don't do this anymore, when the truth is, it's what I enjoy most."

Redford was actively considering a sequel to Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid before sidekick and pal Paul Newman passed away in 2008 and he has recently hinted he's interested in revisiting classic romance The Way We Were with Barbra Streisand.

He'll also take on a major role in an upcoming biopic about baseball legend Jackie Robinson, and star in a film adaptation of Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods.
