Robert Duvall

Robert Duvall

Robert Duvall has no plans to step out of the limelight - because so many people die soon after they retire.

The 79-year-old Oscar-winner has spent over five decades as an actor, and stars in 2009's critically acclaimed Crazy Heart, which has earned Jeff Bridges a Best Actor Academy Award nomination at next months' ceremony (Mar10).

And although he is way past retirement age, Duvall is adamant actors don't need to stop working when they get old.

He tells Britain's Observer, "Retiring is like the end of the world, especially in this business. You need self-fulfilment. Why retire?

"An athlete retires at 35, 40 at the most; an actor doesn't have to retire till he's 80 or whatever. A lot of people, when they retire, it's over, they're gone... men quicker than women."

And the actor is back on the big screen next month in Crazy Heart alongside Jeff Bridges, who has been nominated for an Oscar for his peformance.

Also on the horizon for Duvall is The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, in which he will play Quixote, and that's due for release in 2011.
