Robert Downey Jr believes that they had to ‘twist up’ the character of Sherlock Holmes in the latest movie to give it a fresh feel.
The actor takes on the role of the super-sleuth in Guy Ritchie’s version of Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous character.
Speaking at the UK press conference the actor said: "There's an esoteric element to this and sometimes you just feel like you're in the right groove and you feel the history and the legacy of something.
"Sometimes you just feel like you're being silently approved of from some other place in time. You can't beat Doyle's words, so we had one of his quotes on the call sheet every day.
“We had to twist it up a bit; I think it's no mystery that Sherlock Holmes didn't invent the silencer... We were honouring it but still being entertaining."
Revealing fighting skills as lethal as his legendary intellect, Holmes will battle as never before to bring down a nemesis and unravel a deadly plot that could destroy the country.
Jude Law stars as Holmes’ sidekick Watson while Rachel McAdams stars as Irene Adler, the only woman ever to have bested Holmes and who has maintained a tempestuous relationship with the detective.
Mark Strong stars as their mysterious new adversary, Blackwood. Kelly Reilly plays Watson’s love interest, Mary.
Sherlock Holmes is released Boxing Day.
