Robert Downey, Jr. is in talks to bring another famous literary detective back to life as Warner Brothers bosses move forward with a new Perry Mason film franchise.

The actor, who is currently playing Sherlock Holmes on the big screen for director Guy Ritchie, has emerged as the favourite to play Raymond Burr's iconic U.S. TV crime solver.

Downey, Jr. and his wife Susan Downey are also interested in producing the project and the Iron Man star has dreamed up the screenplay for the revamp with executive producer David Gambino, according to trade paper Daily Variety.

Burr played Perry Mason on TV in the 1960s. The detective character first appeared in Erie Stanley Gardner's novels and also features in a radio series.

The actor has just completed filming on The Avengers, in which he will reprise the role of Iron Man.

And he will be back on the big screen later this year for a second Sherlock Holmes movies, once again directed by Guy Ritchie.
