Ridley Scott

Ridley Scott has revealed that his re-telling of Robin Hood is an origins story that introduces us to the infamous outlaw.

Scott reunites with Russell Crowe this week for the movie, which also stars Cate Blanchett and Mark Strong, and is not the story that we are used to seeing.

In an interview with metro the filmmaKer said: "We have Robin as a yeoman, as he was in many of the earlier stories and ballads from the 15th and 16th centuries.

"He's just an archer in King Richard's army and hasn't been back to England since his childhood.

"Our story in this film is like an origins tale: it takes us to the point where he's outlawed and enters the forest as Robin Of The Hood.

"When he went into the forest, we could then follow his adventures up until King John is forced to sign the Magna Carta. I think that could form a sequel. I guess we'll have to wait and see."

There have been many incarnations of Robin Hood on the big screen over the years but not of them have not sat well with Scott.

"I don't care what people say, those green tights and all the happy feasting in the forest don't fly.

"Life in the forest would have been incredibly tough. People always say, 'But it is good fun'. It's not good fun, it's awful, and I hope that our film helps in some way to redress the balance."

Robin Hood is released 12th May.
