Ridley Scott has dismissed the idea that making movies is an art form.
The director, who is back on the big screen next month with his re-telling of robin Hood, believes that it's how the movie sells and performs that is the most important thing.
He told The Daily Telegraph: "Cannes is a market place because that's what we do. We make movies and we try to sell them.
"There's no other way around it. To say it's all about pure art is nonsense; it's about how do you sell your movie.
"I don't care if it's a high budget or a low-budget movie, if I don't sell it there's no point in making it."
Robin Hood sees him reunite with leading man Russell Crowe as the movie brings together a great cast that also include Cate Blanchett and Mark Strong.
The movie will get it's world premiere next month when it opens the Cannes Film Festival.
Robin Hood is released 12th May.
