Ricky Gervais has compared his new movie Cemetery Junction to British movie Saturday Night And Sunday Morning.
As well as starring in the movie Gervais once again moves behind the camera to direct, with the help of Stephen Merchant, and admits that the movie has elements of the Albert Finney classic.
In an interview with Digital Spy Gervais said: "It's Saturday Night Fever in the sense that it's about blue collar guys living for today. It's not about dancing, as such.
"We've left the veil of irony behind that we had for The Office and Extras. It's a bit of Rebel Without A Cause, there's one guy in it who's sort of a James Dean-type figure.
"British movies, I suppose we're trying to do a new wave of New Wave. A British film it reminds me of is probably something like Saturday Night And Sunday Morning.
"Stick all that in the pot, mix it up and you get Cemetery Junction."
Cemetery Junction tells the funny, touching and universal story of being trapped in a small town and dreaming of escape. In 1970s England, three blue-collar friends spend their days joking, drinking, fighting and chasing girls.
Cemetery Junction is the second time in the director's chair after co-directing his last movie The Invention of Lying with Matthew Robinson.
Cemetery Junction is released 17th April.
