Patrick Swayze is to be remembered by residents of the North Carolina community where he filmed Dirty Dancing.
Swayze lost his battle with pancreatic cancer on Monday (14Sep09), aged 57, after a life spent wowing movie audiences with great roles, but his best remembered will always be 1987 love story Dirty Dancing, in which he played summer camp dance teacher Johnny Castle.
Much of the low-budget movie was filmed in the town of Lake Lure and community members have organised a tribute to the star with a memorial service on Saturday (19Sep09), which will take place at Firefly Cove - a housing development which featured in the movie as his character's summer cabin.
Visitors who attend the public service will be asked to donate to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
Released in 1987 Dirty Dancing, which also starred Jennifer Grey, was a monster hit grossing over $213 million at the box office and has gone on to remain as popular now as it was then.
As well as the success of the movie the soundtrack was just as popular, (I've Had) The Time of My Life picking up an Oscar for Best Original Song, and in recent years the movie has been adapted for the stage.
