Paranormal Activity 2 has stormed to the top of the U.S. box office, toppling Jackass 3D after just a single week at number one.
The horror movie comes twelve months after it's predecessor marched up the box office chart through word of mouth, to become one of the most talked about films of 2009.
After experiencing what they think are a series of "break-ins", a family sets up security cameras around their home, only to realize that the events unfolding before them are more sinister than they seem.
Tod Williams is in the director's chair second time around and the movie to $41.5 million in it's opening weekend to comfortably hold off the competition from Jackass 3D.
Jackass 3D fell just a single place to this week's number two while Red, which stars Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman and John Malkovich, was also down one at number three.
The second and final new entry was in at four in the for m of Hereafter. The film is the latest offering from actor turned director Clint Eastwood as he reunites with Invictus star Matt Damon.
Former number one The Social Network fell two places to round off the top five while Secretariat was also down two at number six.
There was also a two place fall from Life As We Know It, Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls Of Ga'Hoole and The Town at seven, eight and nine.
Easy A dropped just a single place to round off the top ten.
