Oliver Stone believes that leaders like Hugo Chávez 'are not the bad guys'.
The Oscar winning director's new movie South of the Boarder is a documentary that look at the politics of South American and he has come to the conclusion that Venezuela's leader Chavez has faced too much criticism.
Speaking to the New York Daily New he said: "There is no pattern of repression [in Venezuela]," he told the New York Daily News.
"[It] has one of the most vigorous political oppositions in the world. I think the American people have been hearing lies [as part of] the official story; leaders like Chávez are not the bad guys."
He added: '"The good guys are being made into bad guys by a very wily disinformation campaign.
"The truth isn't getting out to the people... You have to be there to understand that this is a popular movement."
South of the Boarder is the first movie of the year for Stone and his first picture since biopic movie W. back in 2008.
But he is returning to drama in September when Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, a sequel to the 1987 movie, is finally released.
The movie sees Michael Douglas return to the role of Gordon Gekko and he is joined by Shia LaBeouf, Carey Mulligan and Josh Brolin.
