Oliver Stone has revealed that he is still upset at how Alexander was received when it was released.
The movie, which starred Colin Farrell, Anthony Hopkins, Angelina Jolie and Val Kilmer, was panned was it hit the big screen back in 2004.
In an interview with Empire Stone said: 'Oh it broke my heart. That had been a lifetime effort. It was an independent film, up from the bootstraps.
"We shot under stringent budget completion conditions - we could just not go over. So we actually did complete the movie in 90 some days on three continents, which is quite a logistical achievement.
"That could have been a disaster right there. But it was slotted for releases four or five months later. It was very difficult to make that slot. But I gave in and did it.
"I convinced myself that that was the right thing to do. And then it was received so poorly. What bothered me wasn't the critics. It was more internal for me. There was another way to cut the damn thing.
"Three years go by and I'm working on it all the time. There no money in it. Warner Bros was supportive and gave me the money to do a third version for Blu-Ray. It's the most beautiful version if you project it."
But the director is back later this year with his new movie Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, a sequel to 1987 movie.
Michael Douglas is back as Gordon Gekko alongside Shia LaBeouf, Josh Brolin and Carey Mulligan.
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps is released 24th September.
