Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian has held off strong competition from Terminator Salvation to top the US box office.
Set two years later Larry Daley is a successful inventor and has left his night guard job at the Museum of Natural History
But when the museum closes for a refit, and some of the exhibits wrapped up and shipped off to the legendary Smithsonian Institute in Washington, home of Al Capone's mug shot, Fonzie's jacket from Happy Days and a few million other priceless items, Larry sets off in hot pursuit.
Stiller and co, who are returning three years after the success of the first movie, grossed over $53 million in it's opening weekend.
Despite poor opening reviews from American critics Terminator Salvation, the fourth movie in the Terminator franchise, still opened at number two grossing a respectable $43 million.
However in a summer that has already seen impressive opening weekenders grosses from both Wolverine and Star Trek this will be seen as a disappointment.
Star Trek slipped just one place from two to three while Angels and Demons had to settle for the number four spot.
Dance Flick was the only other new entry in the top ten at number five.
1. Night At The Museum 2 - $53,500,000

3. Star Trek - $21,951,000
