Wallace and Gromit

Nick Park, the creator of BAFTA-award winning animation Wallace and Gromit is having to send his trophy away to be repaired - he broke the gong as soon as he was presented with it on Sunday (08Feb09) night.

Park, the brains behind the beloved plasticine pair, stepped up to collect the Short Animation award for Wallace & Gromit: A Matter Of Loaf And Death at the ceremony in London at the weekend.

But as soon as he left the stage the award broke - and Park found himself laughing about the blunder with actor Christian Slater.

He says, "As soon as I got it off the stage I dropped it and it broke. I was talking to Christian Slater at the time and we had a bit of a joke that they don't make awards like they used to. It's got to go back for repairs."

The animator has found major success with Wallace and Gromit winning four Oscars from five nominations. His first came for Creature Comforts but the other three were for The Wrong Trousers, A Close Shave and The Curse of the Were Rabbit.

Despite winning the Bafta and the Annie Award for Best Animated Short Subject Wallace and Gromit's latest adventure, A Matter of Loaf and Death, is out of the running for the Oscar due to the late completion of the film.
