Nicholas Hoult has admitted he is shocked by his Bafta nomination.

The young actor has been nominated for the Orange Rising Star Award, the only gong that is voted for by the public, which recognises breakthrough and up and coming acting talent.

But the British actor, who shot to fame in About A Boy before moving on to hit TV drama Skins, faces tough competition with Carey Mulliagan, Kristen Stewart, Jesse Eisenberg and Tahar Rahim also securing nods.

Speaking to newsbeat he said: "It was a big surprise. I remember I managed to blag a ticket to the BAFTAs last year and watched Dev [Patel] up there with Slumdog.

"I don't really feel as though I'm in a position to be nominated for it particularly. I guess A Single Man, which is the film I've been nominated for, has been doing well."

"It feels fantastic. One of the major reasons that this particular one means a lot to myself and to my agent Kate Buckley is because it was created in honour of her mum Mary Selway.

"When we found out that I'd been nominated we were both chuffed to bits. Me and Kate have been working together for nearly seven years now."

Hoult stars alongside Colin Firth in new movie A Single Man which follows an English professor who, after the sudden death of his partner tries to go about his typical day in Los Angeles.

The movie also stars Julianne Moore, Matthew Goode and Ginnifer Goodwin.

A Single Man is released 12th February and the Bafta winners will be revealed 21st February.
