Neil Marshall has admitted that he wanted to make his new movie Centurion brutal.
The British director is back this week with his new movie that brings together a great cast of Michael Fassbender. David Morrissey, Dominic West and Noel Clarke.
Talking to Total Film the British filmmaker said: "I wanted the audience to feel the hits, feel the cold, feel the rain. I wanted viewers to get with these character because of the hell they're going through.
"And it's not just the Picts, a people so tough we had to build Hadrian's Wall to keep them out, but the harsh landscape, the wolves... If your foot goes into a hole and you break your leg you're fucked.
"I always meant this to be a brutal film. I wanted to show blood for what it is. I had no intention of glossing it all up and making it super stylised."
The movie follows a splinter group of Roman soldiers fight for their lives behind enemy lines after their legion is decimated in a devastating guerrilla attack.
Centurion is the first movie for Marshall since Doomsday back in 2008, the filmmaker has also brought us the likes of The Descent and Dog Soldiers.
Centurion is released 23rd April.
