Natasha Richardson, who was admitted to hospital earlier in the week after a fall, has passed away.
The actress was in Canada skiing with their children when she fell on the beginners slope at the Mont Tremblant resort on Monday.
But the actress showed no sign of injury until an hour later when she was taken to a nearby hospital as she was complaining of headaches.
Later it was confirmed that her injuries were serious and her husband, actor Liam Neeson, left the set of his latest movie to at the bedside of his wife.
She was then moved to Lenox Hill Hospital in New York on Tuesday.
At the hospital Neeson was joined by the couple's two children, Richardson's mother Vanessa Redgrave and her sister Joely Rochardson. But it was announced just before midnight that the actress, aged 45, had died.
Alan Nierob, Neeson's publicist, said: "Liam Neeson, his sons, and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha.
"They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time."
