Mike Newell has revealed that he took the making of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time very seriously because of the poor results computer game themed movies have had at the box office.

Newell has helmed the latest Jerry Bruckheimer blockbuster Prince of Persia, which sees Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton join forces and lead the cast.

The British filmmaker was aware that computer game inspired movies had not been received well over recent years, Max Payne and Hitman just two examples, and wanted to understand the game before taking on the job.

In an interview with heyUGuys.co.uk he said:"When we started, one of the things I said to Jerry Bruckheimer was, 'I'm not in the generation for video games, does it matter and if so, how much does it matter?'

"At that stage, everyone was aware that we had to make a story that was a general audience, not a game audience that had real scope and epicness to it, character, action, romance, comedy and all of those things and then little by little we discovered that the gamers themselves are very vocal, they had websites and all sorts of stuff and asked.

"I took it seriously in that I knew I had to understand the game."

Prince of Perisa: The Sands of Time is Newell's first movie since Love In A Time of Cholera back in 2007 and his first blockbuster since 2005's Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is released 21st May.
