Michael Shannon has revealed that he was shocked when he landed the role of General Zod in the new Superman movie.

The actor joins an all star cast of Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as the popular franchise to the big screen.

The movie will be directed by ZAck Snyder and Shannon admits he was stunned when he was offered the part.

Speaking to Shortlist the actor said: He told Shortlist: "It was one of the most surreal experiences of my life because I was against this panoramic window, looking out on these beautiful hills, rose bushes and hummingbirds while Zack was saying, 'And then, on Krypton, this happens'.

"By the end, I was kind of confused. I was like, 'Is this an offer or not?' We shook hands and he said he wanted me as Zod.

"I was thinking, 'There's something wrong here. This is one of the largest films around. I'm not Robert De Niro - I don't understand why this is being plonked on my lap'."

Filming on the movie is currently underway but we will have to wait until 2013 before we finally get to see the reboot.

But Shannon is back on the big screen this week with Take Shelter, which sees him team up with filmmaker Jeff Nichols.
