Michael Fassbender has revealed that he was inspired to take on Jane Eyre because his mother and sister are such big fans of the book.

The actor is set to play the role of Rochester in Cary Fukunaga's adaptation of the Bronte novel - which stars Mia Wasikowska in the title role.

Speaking to Collider the actor said: "My sister and my mother were big fans when I was a child and when I was in my teens as well, they were always talking about it because my sister was reading it.

"That was the reason why I wanted to do it, so they could take a look."

And while Fassbender watched as many different actors playing the role as he could find he admits that he went back to the book to develop the character.

"Then I threw it all away and then I sort of concentrated on what was in the book and what was in the script.

"By treating him as the Byronic hero, which Brontë wrote him like, that gave me all I needed."

This summer also sees Fassbender take on the big budget blockbuster with X-Men: First Class, in which he plays Erik Lehnsher aka Magneto.

Jane Eyre is released 9th September.
