Mia Wasikowska has revealed that she has been haunted by Alice In Wonderland.

The young actress takes on the central role of Alice in Tim Burton's reworking of the popular story.

Speaking to The Times she said: "My other encounter with Alice was the Czech director Jan Svankmajer's version, a stop-motion animated film, which is incredible. When we were kids, my mum would pop it in the VCR player.

"We would be disturbed, and wouldn't really understand it, but we couldn't look away because it was too intriguing. So I had kept that feeling about Alice, a kind of haunting feeling."

Despite being very familiar with the original story the actress admits that she likes the twist that Burton brings to the familiar tale.

"It was like finding the person inside or underneath the iconic Alice. Now she's an older Alice, who is experiencing what many teenagers are experiencing - a kind of awkwardness, discomfort in your skin and in your society or among your peers, a feeling of isolation."

The movie looks set to shoot Wasikowska to stardom as she stars alongside Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter.

And the actress is going to be kept busy over the next few months with a string of projects in the pipeline.

She will next be seen on the big screen with Julianne Moore in The Kids Are All Right and she begins filming Jane Eyre this month, in which she plays the central role.

Alice In Wonderland is released 5th March.
