Mel Gibson has admitted that he got the acting 'itch' back and that's why has returned to the big screen with The Edge of Darkness.
Gibson has had an eight year hiatus during which time he has concentrated of directing with The Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto.
In an interview with Parade Gibson said: "I just got the itch. I walked away after Signs because I just felt I was a bit stale and acting wasn't ringing my bells.
"So I focused on directing, writing and producing. I got the bug again because I felt like, all of a sudden, after all these years, I might have something to offer."
"You can't worry about stuff like critics or the box office. You've just got to do your best and move on.
"Every time you put yourself out there, you wonder if you can do it. There's no secret recipe."
The Edge of Darkness sees Gibson take on the role of homicide detective Thomas Craven who tries to uncover why his daughter was murdered.
On the horizon for Gibson is a movie called The Beaver, directed by Jodie Foster as well as starring the Oscar winning actress and Anton Yelchin
Edge of Darkness is out now.
