Matt Damon has described Gus Van Sant as the director that Promised Land needed.
Damon was set to make his directorial debut with the movie that he wrote with co-star John Krasinski but handed over the reigns to Van Sant.
The pair worked together in bringing Good Will Hunting to the big screen and Damon has no regrets in leaving the director's chair.
Speaking to Buzzine the actor said: "He's such a humanist, and this story needed that. I mean, the performances in Gus's movies, from his little movies to his bigger movies, always have that feeling of being captured.
"He just has a way of getting real human behaviour out of the actors."
"Gus just has a way of putting everybody at ease and filming the real world. And that's what we really wanted for this, was to feel like a moment in time in the country. Where we are now, where we are today."
Promised Land is the first script that Damon has penned since Gerry back in 2002 - a movie that Van Sant also directed - and saw him work with Krasinski for the first time.
Promised Land is released 19th April.
