Matt Damon has admitted that he has no idea what is going on with the Bourne franchise.
It was rumoured earlier in the year that the series would continue without Damon in the lead role and Paul Greengrass in the director's chair.
In the autumn it was believed that Tony Gilroy, who penned the first three movies, would be in the director's chair but Damon reveals that he has not talked to the filmmaker about the project.
Speaking to MTV the actor said: "I have no idea what he has planned," Damon said of Gilroy. "But he's a very smart guy, so I'm sure it's going to be good.
"I do know that whatever he's doing won't preclude Paul [Greengrass] and I from coming back and doing ours.
"What they ultimately want is a franchise that can kind of go on and on. We explained to them that our character isn't like James Bond.
"You can't send him on a mission. There's character development, there's an arc that the character has travelled through the three movies.
"You don't just start over at the beginning of every movie. So I think what they're looking for is a way to build that in so that they can continue without Paul and me eventually."
Damon is back on the big screen in the new year as he stars with Jeff Bridges in a remake of True Grit whilst also reuniting with filmmaker Clint Eastwood for Hereafter.
