Martin Scorsese has compared Leonardo DiCaprio to Robert De Niro.

The Oscar winning filmmaker is teaming up with DiCaprio again later this month for their latest movie Shutter Island; it would be the fourth project together.

And Scorsese is the first to admit that his partnership with one of the biggest stars in Hollywood at the moment was like working with De Niro in the seventies and eighties.

Speaking to Empire magazine the director said: "He reminds me of the excitement when De Niro and I stumbled on a way of working together - a similar kind of energy to the actors of the 1970s.

"It’s very rare for me to find that kind of connection again. Leo will find me the emotion where I least expect it and could only hope for for about three or four scenes. And he can do it take after take."

Shutter Island is an adaptation for the Dennis Lehane novel and also stars Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams and Emily Mortimer.

The film is set in 1954 and U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels is investigating the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane and is presumed to be hiding on the remote Shutter Island.

Shutter Island is released  19th February.
