Martin Scorsese has suggested that the actor who may end up playing Frank Sinatra might be an unknown.

The Oscar winning filmmaker is poised to direct a biopic about the singer/actor and it was believed that Leonardo DiCaprio would reunite with Scorsese to take on the role.

But Scorsese admits that he may cast an unknown in the role but he is keen to find 'Sinatra's voice'.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight the filmmaker said: "Leo's always talked about doing it, but what if the story takes you in a completely different way? We could go for an unknown.

"Maybe the person who plays him isn't important. Maybe it's distracting to have a star in that role. Yet, you can't have someone else sing!"

"It's got to be Sinatra's voice. It's tricky. It's filled with problems - and whatever you do, there's always going to be people who don't like it, so you have to find something special. And I think I've found it. Now's the time to execute it on the page."

The script is still being worked on as Scorsese decides which era to focus on the movie.

Scorsese's last movie outing was with the much loved Hugo, which went on to be nominated for a string of Oscars, including Best Picture.

He will be back in the director's chair this summer as he reunites with DiCaprio for a new drama The Wolf On Wall Street.
