Marlon Brando was a misunderstood eccentric, according to Francis Ford Coppola, the director who knew him best.
Coppola cast Brando in two of his most famous roles as mafia boss Don Vito Corleone in The Godfather and Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now.
And the Oscar-winning director insists Brando's reputation as a difficult diva was unfair.
Coppola says, "Marlon was never hard to work with. His behavior was a little eccentric on the set.
"He was like a bad boy and did what he wanted. But as an actor he was never hard to work with."
Despite appearing in some classic movies such as A Street Car Named Desire and The Wild One for many his role as Don Vito Corleone is the role that he is remembered for.
He won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in the film but turned the award down, becoming the second actor to refuse a Best Actor award.
Widely considered as one of the greatest actors of all time Brando passed away in 2004 at the age of eighty from respiratory failure brought on by pulmonary fibrosis.
