Marion Cotillard says that she was drawn to Rust and Bone because she has not had the chance to tell many love stories in the movies that she has made.
The actress is back on the big screen this week as she teams up with director Jacques Audiard to tell the story of a young woman who overcomes losing her leg in an accident.
Speaking to the Press Association the actress said: "When I read the script, I realised it was something I had never done before.
"I don't tell many love stories and this one is very unusual. I totally fell in love with all the characters."
"I didn't do any research about what it is to have lost a part of your body, because what was very important for me was that what she gained after the accident was much more than what she'd lost."
Cotillard may already have one Best Actress Oscar under her belt but she may very well get another for this performance.
The movie has been the toast of the festival circuit so far this year and Cotillard is being tipped to be a major Oscar contender.
Rust and Bone is released 2nd November.
