Marion Cotillard has revealed that she struggled letting go of Edith Piaf after the movie La Vie En Rose.

The actress won an Oscar for her portrayal as the troubled singer back in 2007 but admits that she couldn't leave her behind.

Speaking to The Independent the actress said: "I had this weird feeling. And I'm very sane! I don't live with my role, I'm a really normal person.

"Well, I'm an actress, I'm not that normal! But I tend to be really normal."

"I couldn't let her go because her biggest fear when she was alive - of course, we don't have fear when we're dead - was to be alone. And then when we finished the movie, I didn't want Édith to be alone.

"That's crazy! Then, suddenly, going back to my life and leaving her alone... It just took time for me to realise that she had been dead for a while... So it was okay! She was not alone! She was gone."

Cotillard is back on the big screen this week with her new movie Little White Lies, her first movie since Inception last summer.

Her next movie sees her team up with filmmaker Woody Allen as she stars alongside Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams in Midnight In Paris.

Little White Lies is released 15th April.
