Kevin Spacey has revealed that it was the success of American Beauty that made him want to pursue his current career in the theatre.
The movie was met with critical acclaim when it was released 1999, it went on to win Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor at the Oscars.
And it was finding this success in the movies that made him want to go and try something different
Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph the actor said: "After American Beauty came out, frankly it went better than I could possibly hope - and I thought, 'I've done it, I don't need to chase that dream'".
"What could I do now? Was I going to spend ten years trying to be that guy on those lists in the 'hot' movies?
"I want to chase another dream, and do something different.
But instead of staying in the film industry Spacey has moved into the theatre - becoming the artistic director at the Old Vic.
"I wanted to put all the incredible good fortune and put it towards something that needs my help, which is the Old Vic.
"It meant my priorities shifted - not that I walked away from film, but I was walking towards something else."
