Kevin Costner is in talks to produce a new TV mini-series about post-Civil War America.

The Oscar-winning history buff plans to direct and star in episodes of the series, which will study settlement in the western U.S. states.

Costner has already tackled the wild west in hit movies Wyatt Earp and Dances with Wolves.

A spokeswoman for America's A&E Network, which hopes to air the new Costner series, says, "He (Costner) understands the western (film) better than anybody, and he respects the genre.

"He knows every bit of detail about the west; this is a genre he feels a lot of passion for. It's a perfect fit."

Although Costner found fame as an actor with roles in The Untouchables and Field of Dreams his biggest success came with Dances with Wolves in 1990, which he starred in and directed.

It was nominated for twelve Oscars winning Best Picture and Best Director. Since then he has gone on to direct the likes of The Postman and Open Range.
