Joss Whedon has offered $10,000 (£6,250) to take over the Terminator film franchise.

The TV mogul has posted an open letter on fansite Whedonesque.com asking film bosses to seriously consider his offer amid reports the franchise is being auctioned off.

He tells EW.com, "I love The Terminator... I was thinking to myself, 'Not since they auctioned off frames from The Little Mermaid have I wished I had more money this much. So you know what, never hurts to ask.'

"I loved the movies, even the later movies. I loved the mythology. I loved the TV show (The Sarah Connor Chronicles) - like, really loved. Not for pretend."

But Whedon doesn't think his cash offer will be enough: "I do not think they’re going to call me and say, 'Congratulations! We’ll have that $10,000 now.'"

McG helmed the fourth film in the franchise Terminator Salvation during the summer which saw Christian Bale take on the central character of John Connor.

The movie was not met well by the critics it grossed $371 million at the global box office, which paled beside the likes of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen's gross of $832 million.

There were rumours that McG was planning a sequel but that now looks unlikely to go ahead.
