Joss Whedon reveals that he is set to delve a little deeper in the characters in Avengers 2.
The green light has been given on a sequel to the monster summer smash Avengers Assemble with Whedon back to helm the project.
And he admits that he is already giving the story some thought and hints that the creation of the team in the first movie is merely the beginning.
Speaking to Vancouver.24HRS the director said: "The creation of the team is not the happy ending. It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I'm digging, just twist that knife. And that's exciting for me."
"It's still in the story stage. But I've been working on it pretty much from about an hour before I said, 'Let's make a deal'.
"It just caught fire with me. We're hard at work. We would like to be not as rushed as we were with the first one."
Avengers Assemble broke the $1 billion barrier when it was released earlier this year and has gone on to become the third biggest movie of all time.
Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson all came together while Whedon was in the director's chair.
Next year we will be seeing Downey Jr back in a third Iron Man film and Hemsworth will reprise the role of Thor for a sequel.
A second Avengers movie is not expected to hit the big screen until summer 2015.
