Joss Whedon has revealed that he almost quit his television career.

The director is behind shows such as Firefly and Dollhouse and admits that having both shows axe was a major blow to him calling the cancellation of Firefly 'the greatest grief I have abut my career.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald he said: "I stopped having ideas, which for me is an extremely rare experience. It was something much more subtle [than losing hope], it took away my ability to think in terms of episodic television [at all]. For years."

But his movie career was given a major boost this year as it was announced that he would direct The Avengers, which brings together many of the Marvel action heroes.

"Honestly, this year with my career, I've been going, 'OK, is it over? Are they done with me and is it time for me to start doing really small [projects] or make a graceful exit?'"

"But then I got The Avengers. So, clearly, I'm an idiot."

The Avengers will see Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans reprise their roles as Iron Man, Thor and Captain America as well as introducing Hawkeye, in the form of Jeremy Renner, for the first time.

Mark Ruffalo will take on the role of Bruce Banner aka The Hulk while Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson reprise their roles as Nick Fury and the Black Widow.
