Johnny Depp believes he is fortunate to get to work on a movie such as Pirates of the Caribbean.

Despite enjoying success throughout the nineties and early noughties it is the role of Captain Jack Sparrow that shot him to the top of the Hollywood tree.

His work on Curse of the Black Pearl brought him a Best Actor Oscar nomination and now he is back for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Speaking to the BBC the actor said:  "Everyday I'm amazed of where I've landed on two feet. I'm amazed I landed at all. To have landed here - I promise you that no one in Hollywood could have ever predicted it.

"I consider myself to be incredibly lucky to have been given the opportunity first of all to take part in the building of the character like [Captain Jack Sparrow], and it was a complete and utter surprise, not only to me, especially to me, but to the people behind the scenes and the Disney folk, and the [Jerry] Bruckheimer folk, it was a complete surprise."

Fourth time around the movie is now under the guidance of director Rob Marshall, who takes over from Gore Verbinski.

Geoffrey Rush also returns as Barbossa while Ian McShane and Penelope Cruz are two new faces on the cast list.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is out now.
