Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp believes that it is because of the support of Jerry Bruckheimer that he found success with the character of Jack Sparrow and Pirates of the Caribbean.

This week sees Depp return for a fourth movie in the popular franchise, coming four years after the last instalment.

But Depp states that it's only through the support of the producer and then director Gore Verbinski was he able to bring Sparrow to the big screen.

Speaking at the press conference at the Cannes Film Festival Depp said: "The only reason that I'm still around is because I was so supported by, first and foremost Jerry Bruckheimer, and the director on the first one, Gore Verbinski, in terms of what I was bringing to the table character-wise.

"There wasn't a group of Disney upper echelon who had any enthusiasm whatsoever for what I was doing. They almost subtitled me!"

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is the second movie of the year for Depp after finding success with Rango earlier this year.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is released 18th May.
