Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp has revealed that he was considered as box office poison before the success of Pirates of the Caribbean.

The role of Captain Jack Sparrow saw Depp shoot to the top of the Hollywood tree, as well as bagging an Oscar nomination, as the movies became one of the most successful franchises of all time.

Speaking at the UK press conference for Alice In Wonderland the actor said: "I've just been very lucky over the years.

"It's a miracle that people still hire me after some of the stuff I've gotten away with. I lay it all down to luck. Prior to Pirates Of The Caribbean, they literally used to call me box office poison."

However the actor's A-lister status does come with some benefits, it ensures that he can continue to work with filmmaker Tim Burton.

"I was kind of okay with that, it didn't bother me at all. Suddenly Pirates happened and then Tim doesn't have to fight with studios to get me the gig anymore, which he had to for many years.

And the pair are working together once again on Alice In Wonderland, their seventh movie together, as Depp leads the cast as the Mad Hatter.

Alice In Wonderland is released 5th March.
