Johnny Depp's Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street leads the Empire awards nominations with five nods.
Johnny Depp leads the Best Actor category while there is Best Actress nod for Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton is recognised in the Best Director category.
This year’s nominations have proven the popularity of both sci-fi and fantasy with comic books and secret agents leading the field, as well as Academy Award-winning dramas.
The Dark Knight and Iron Man jostle for recognition with four and three awards respectively, proving that superheroes have grasped moviegoers’ imaginations, whilst James Bond continues to wow audiences, with his latest high-octane adventure, Quantum Of Solace, also receiving four nominations.
The Academy Award-winning features There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men receive four and three nominations respectively. Last, but not least, family audiences gave a big thumbs up to Disney Pixar’s WALL-E, which garners three nominations.
Joining comic-book heroes from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight and Jon Favreau’s Iron Man in the running for the coveted position of Best Film are Paul Thomas Anderson’s powerful drama There Will Be Blood, the Coen brother’s Academy Award-winning thriller No Country For Old Men and, on a lighter note, the animated tale of loveable and loved-up robot WALL-E.
The Dark Knight, Iron Man and Quantum Of Solace all feature in the Best Actor category, presented by Jameson Irish Whisky, with nominations for Christian Bale, Robert Downey Jr and Daniel Craig respectively.
They are joined by Daniel Day Lewis with his Academy Award-winning performance in There Will Be Blood, and, proving that a trip to the barber’s could be bad for your health, is Johnny Depp in Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
To mark his spectacular vision of The Joker in The Dark Knight (and the impact it had on Empire’s readers), and to commemorate his remarkable but all-too-brief career, a special award will be given to the late Heath Ledger.
