Johnny Depp says that he feels he didn't sell out by making Pirates of the Caribbean sequels as he had no idea they were going to be so successful.
The actor was back on the big screen this summer for a fourth instalment of the hit franchise - a movie that went on to gross in excess of $1 billion.
It is the second film in the series, the first being Dead Man's Chest, to break that barrier but Depp admits that he just loves playing the character of Jack Sparrow.
Talking to the Guardian the actor said: "I wouldn't change anything, no. Because I think I went into it innocently, and it became what it became.
"And now they want to tear me down. Instantly, as soon as I did Pirates II, they say, 'Oh, he's selling out'."
"What the f**k does that mean, selling out? What if I did Ed Wood II, is that selling out?
"I mean, it's not like I was ever looking to become franchise boy, I was never looking to become anything like that. I just latched on to a character I loved."
But Depp leaves Captain Jack behind this week as he leads an all star cast in The Rum Diary, an adaptation of the Hunter S Thompson novel of the same name.
The Rum Diary is released 11th November.
