Johnny Depp is campaigning for director Rob Marshall to take charge of a planned movie remake of detective film The Thin Man.

Depp is currently working on the fourth instalment of The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise with Marshall and he's keen to continue his working relationship with the filmmaker.

He is reportedly lobbying for Marshall to sign on for the upcoming Warner Brothers project, for which he'll take the lead role, reports New York Magazine's Vulture blog.

The Thin Man, based on the 1934 book by Dashiell Hammett, previously hit the big screen as a six-film franchise starring William Powell as Nick Charles, a detective who gives up his career and becomes an alcoholic househusband.

It also hit small screens in the U.S. as a TV series between 1957 and 1959.

Depp enjoyed more huge box office success earlier this year when Alice In Wonderland, which was the last time that we saw him on the big screen, broke $1 billion worldwide.

The actor now has two movies that have achieved that rare feat, the other being Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. But Depp is back in action at the end of the year when he stars alongside Angelina Jolie in The Tourist.
