Joaquin Phoenix has revealed that he wanted out of movie project I'm Still Here due to the pressure of his performance.
The actor was back on the big screen earlier this month in a documentary shot by his brother in law Casey Affleck.
The movie followed Phoenix, who had retired from the movie industry earlier in the year, as he tried to launch a rap career.
The film and Phoenix's behaviour was claimed to be real until it was revealed after the movie was released that it was all a performance from the Oscar nominated actor.
Speaking to Extra, Phoenix said:"At some point, it became such a public spectacle. To be frank, we were kind of hostage to the process.
"There were times, honestly, where I wanted out. Even on a conventional film, I'm done after four months. But this went on and on."
But Phoenix continued shooting because he wanted to make a different type of movie. "I wanted to make a movie with my friends and make one in a different way.
"I wanted to have a different experience, and I'm really happy to have done that."
I'm Still Here was Phoenix's first big screen appearance since starring alongside Gwyneth Paltrow in Two Lovers back in 2009.
