James McAvoy has admitted that he didn't take Robert Redford's accent advice.
The Scottish star leads the cast in Redford's latest movie The Conspirator as Frederick Aiken, who defended Mary Surratt after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
McAvoy reveals that Redford wanted him to speak in an American accent all of the time, even when they were not filming, but the actor didn't follows his advice.
Speaking to ContactMusic the actor said: "Robert wanted me to be American the entire time, so whenever he was around I was.
"But as soon as he walked off set I was back being myself, which will probably make the accent terrible and everyone will pick holes in it.
"But I can't do it all the time - you would kinda go mad. When the camera stops running I need to take stuff back."
The Conspirator is the first movie for McAvoy since The Last Station and sees him star alongside Robin Wright, Justin Long and Evan Rachel Wood.
The actor is currently filming X-Men: First Class and has lent his voice to Gnomeo and Juliet.
