James Mangold has described The Wolverine as movie about isolation for the title character.
Hugh Jackman is set to return for a second standalone Wolverine movie, the first coming in 2009, while Mangold is in the director's chair for the first time.
And Mangold goes on to say that this is a film explores themes that can't always been looked at in a team movie.
Speaking to Empire the director said: "Where this film sits in the universe of the films is after them all.
"Jean Grey is gone, most of the X-Men are disbanded or gone, so there's a tremendous sense of isolation for him.
"The ideas of immortality reign very heavily in this story," he said, "and the burden of immortality weighs heavily on Logan.
"For me, that's such an interesting part of Logan's character that is nearly impossible to explore if you have a kind of league or team movie."
The Wolverine is the first movie for Mangold since he directed Night and Day back in 2010 having turned his hand to TV.
The Wolverine is released 25th July 2013.
