James Cameron has hit out at movies that are converting to 3D in the post production process.
Cameron set the bar with Avatar back at the end of 2009 - a movie where he shot completely in 3D and blew cinema audiences away.
And while this movie really kicked off the 3D craze very few have followed in Cameron's footsteps and shot in this way - choosing to convert during post production.
But Cameron believes this method is nothing delivering movie go-ers the best that 3D has to offer.
Speaking at the Variety 3D Entertainment Summit the filmmaker said: "The way it's being done, it's not 3D, it's 2.2D, or 2.4D.
"I think we're coming out with something that's 90% of what it would have been if it was shot in 3D, but that's not always being done. As a filmmaker, I would much rather shoot in 3D than convert to 3D to get an equal outcome."
"It's being shoehorned into a post-production process, and there's neither the time or the money to do it right.
"All of a sudden, the director is being told that the movie has to be in 3D but you can't shoot it in 3D. That to me is a complete misapplication of 3D, because you've just taken away all the creativity you can have at the stage of photography."
Avatar went on to be the biggest grossing movie of all time as it took in excess of $2billion at the global box office.
The Oscar winning filmmaker is working on a sequel.
