James Cameron didn't expect Avatar to win Best Picture at last night's Oscars.
It was widely believed that the battle for Best Picture was a two horse race between the box office smashing sci-fi epic and the small budget Iraq drama The Hurt Locker.
Despite Avatar picking up the Best Picture and Best Director prize at the Golden Globes the war movie has been the firm favourite on the awards circuit.
Speaking to Showbiz Spy the filmmaker said: "I think that while this has been a great season for Avatar financially, I think critically it's probably going to lean more towards The Hurt Locker at the Academy Awards. That's fine. That's cool, too."
"I can't lose unless it leads to one of the other films. In that case I'll probably be a little bit more disappointed but as long as it's Hurt Locker or Avatar then I'll be happy."
And he was proved to be right as Kathryn Bigelow's small budget, gritty movie took home Best Picture and Bigelow herself became the first woman in Oscar history to win the Best Director prize.
