Inglourious Basterds has toppled sci-fi drama District 9 from the top spot at the U.S. box office.

Directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring Brad Pitt the movie grossed $37.6 million in it's opening weekend to take the top spot.

Inglourious Basterds begins in German-occupied France, where Shosanna Dreyfus witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa.

Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris, where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema.

Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine organizes a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of retribution.

Known to their enemy as "The Basterds," Raine's squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget Von Hammersmark on a mission to take down the leaders of The Third Reich.

After just one week at the top spot the Peter Jackson produced movie District 9 had to settle for the second spot but grossed a further $18.9 million.

There was a one place fall for G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra as it fell from two to three The Time Traveler's Wife also fell one place to four.

Julie & Julia rounded off the top five. The only other new entry inside the top ten this week came in the form of Post Grad at ten.
